The History of Berlucchi Cuvee Franciacorta
1961 was the magical year of Berlucchi’s first wine; it was the decade of optimism, experimentation and exploration. Guido Berlucchi and Franco Ziliani share a farsighted vision of the winegrowing potential of Franciacorta, a place of verdant rolling hills between Milan and Verona. Berlucchi uniquely produces its wines in the classic Champagne method modeled after the famous Méthode Champenoise or Metodo Classico in Italian, and so claim success at producing sparkling wines that rival the French.
Franco Ziliani met Guido Berlucchi in 1955 at the magnificent Berlucchi mansion. Berlucchi, a descendant of the noble Lana de’ Terzi family, had been searching for a winemaking expert to stabilize the white wine he produced, Pinot del Castello. Thus was founded Guido Berlucchi & C, and in 1961 Ziliani proudly corked three thousand bottles of Pinot di Franciacorta, the first time that Franciacorta, appeared as a wine region on a wine label. Today, Cuvée Imperiale is synonymous with festivity, joy, and raising a toast, equally suited for casual moments and the most special of occasions.
